The Power of Social Media – Case Study

I received a LinkedIn connection request from a guy in Canada, it was a completely random one. He runs an exhibit design agency and saw that I was involved in social networking. http://www.edlab.ca/

  • I suggested to him that his business might benefit from getting involved on event famil. www.eventfamil.com.au
  • He became a participant in event famil that day.
  • As soon as he joined another member left a welcome comment for him and offered her companies services
  • I too reviewed his page, saw his personal photos (which are great) and left a comment for him relating to how great his photos are. Nothing business related.
  • I also contributed to a discussion he had started in one of the groups.
  • The next day I received a personal email from him thanking me for my comments. He is passionate about photography and really appreciated me taking the time to look at them.

Now this took me by complete surprise – He also sent me a copy of his site analytics and offered me a free web banner and listing as a site sponsor on his site. He receives over 64,000 hits a month.

To me this is a perfect example of how social networking does and will always work. My approach was not commercial but I took the time to get to know him a little, building up trust. I don’t know what value the web banner will have but in building up synergy with him it certainly can’t hurt.

Wonder what response the commercially driven member received. Not much I guess as they are obviously hunting for new clients.

Just thought you might be interested and welcome any comments.
